How to Check Bike Insurance Validity Online?
If you own a bike, you would know how important it is to have a good motor insurance policy. But buying bike insurance is not a one-time process. Insurance policies come with an expiry date and need to be renewed regularly after fixed intervals of time, mostly annually.
If you fail to renew the bike insurance policy on time, it loses its validity and would not provide you any kind of financial cover in the event of a mishap. So, it is essential to keep a track of the renewal date which can be easily found in the policy document.
What happens if you want to check the status of your bike insurance policy urgently, but you do not have the insurance papers handy or have lost them altogether? Don’t panic. You can check the bike insurance validity online anytime anywhere. Let’s see how.
How to Check Bike Insurance Validity Online?
Before we tell you how to check two-wheeler insurance validity online, you should first understand what the vehicle registration number is.
When you buy a new bike, you first need to register the vehicle with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of your district within a month of the purchase.
After you have completed the registration process, the RTO issues a registration number, popularly known as the number plate, for your bike. This registration number has to be displayed at the front and back of your vehicle.
The registration number of any vehicle is unique and serves as the bike’s official identity number. Now, when you buy a bike insurance policy , you compulsorily need to submit the registration number of the insured vehicle. The insurer then links the vehicle insurance policy to the bike’s registration number for future references.
This feature makes it possible for you to track the details of your bike insurance policy online with the help of just the vehicle registration number.
Where can we check bike insurance validity online?
Let’s take a look at the platforms where you can check the validity of your bike insurance policy:
1. Insurance Information Bureau
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) launched the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB), a repository for insurance data, back in 2009.
IIB then started maintaining insurance records of vehicles from 1 April 2010 in digital format. So, you can check policy details of any vehicle bought after this date on the IIB web portal.
However, remember that insurance policies which are less than two months old do not appear on the database of the IIB. Also, for new cars, insurance providers submit only the engine and chassis number of the vehicle. So, you would need to use these to track the status of your insurance policy.
2. VAHAN e-Services
Besides IIB, you can also check the bike insurance validity at VAHAN e-Services portal. This website is maintained by the ministry of road transport and highways and handles all the vehicle registration activities in the country.
On the website, click on the ‘Know your vehicle details’ tab from the top navigation. Then enter the registration number of your bike and the verification code sent on your registered mobile or email.
Now, when you click on the ‘Search vehicle’ option, you will see all the basic details of your bike, including the information on the insurance policy. The expiry date of the policy can be found under the ‘Insurance Upto’ column.
3. The insurer’s website
You can also check the validity of your bike insurance policy online through the official website of your insurance company. Most insurers offer the facility of letting policyholders look for insurance details online on their websites by just using the vehicle registration number. Otherwise, if you remember the exact policy number, then you can anyways look for your policy details online on the websites of any of the insurers.
4. RTO or State Transport Department’s websites
You can also visit the official website of your district RTO or the State Transport Department and enter your bike’s registration details to check the insurance status.
